Typically, a standard tuning session takes approximately one to two hours. It is always a good idea to consult your piano tuner for a more accurate estimate based on your specific circumstances.

There are several signs indicating your piano may require servicing. Here are a few things to look out for: 

• When you notice your instrument is out of tune. 

• When you notice the keys feel sluggish, sticky, or respond inconsistently. 

• When you hear unusual sounds such as buzzing or rattling noises during play.

• When you notice certain notes sound louder or quieter than others. 

• When you see some physical signs such as broken or worn parts, along with excessive dust buildup inside the piano. 

Pianos typically require tuning at least once or twice a year, depending on usage frequency. It is also advisable to schedule a tuning session before professional recordings or performances to ensure optimal sound quality. 

Regular tuning and servicing are essential for maintaining the overall stability and lifespan of your piano, as detailed below:

• Pitch Stability: Pianos typically have around 230 metal strings, varying by model. Over time, external factors such as temperature, humidity, and usage can cause the tension in these strings to fluctuate, resulting in the piano going out of tune. Regular tuning not only restores your instrument to its intended pitch but also plays a crucial role in preserving its pitch stability, ensuring consistent performance quality.

• Playability: Consistent maintenance of the piano's action mechanism ensures optimal performance and responsiveness of the instrument. 

• Longevity: Regular servicing helps identify potential issues before they escalate into significant problems, preventing unnecessary damage and extending the instrument's longevity.

• Sound Quality: A well-maintained piano produces a rich, vibrant tone with balanced sound across the keyboard. Regular professional servicing and maintenance guarantee years of quality musical enjoyment.

There are several reasons contribute to this factor.

• Old and rusty strings: The bass strings of a piano, wound with copper, have a tendency to accumulate dust between the windings,  leading to a 'tubby' or 'dead' sounding tone. In addition to this, the consistently high humidity in Malaysia exacerbates the issue, leading to rust formation on the strings. This not only affects the quality of sound but also increases the likelihood of breakage. 

• Lack of Tuning: When a piano is not regularly tuned, the strings can become significantly out of tune. The resulting lack of tension in the strings can cause the instrument to sound dull or lifeless.

• Worn Hammers: As time passes, the felt-covered hammers that strike the piano strings can wear down, resulting in a harsh and less resonant sound. This deterioration can occur naturally over time due to playing or as a result of aging.

• Loose or Broken Parts: Loose or broken parts inside the piano, such as hammers or keys, can compromise the instrument's power and tone, resulting in a dull sound.

The ideal environment for a piano is one that maintains stable temperature and humidity levels. Listed here are some guidelines for creating the optimum condition for a piano:

• Placement: Avoid placing the piano near sources of heat, cold, or water, such as direct sunlight, doorways, windows, and air conditioning vents.  These areas tend to experience significant fluctuations in humidity and temperature, which can detrimentally affect a piano's performance and lifespan.

• Humidity: Maintaining the right humidity level is crucial for preserving the integrity of the piano's wooden component and preventing issues like warping or cracking. While the textbook ideal relative humidity (RH) for pianos falls around 45% to 50%, achieving this in Malaysia's climate can be challenging. In such cases, keeping the RH around low 60% is sufficient, with consistency being key. It's important to avoid letting RH exceed 70%. Installing a Piano Life Saver system can further aid in maintaining stable RH levels around the piano. 

• Temperature: The ideal temperature for pianos is around 20°C, which is challenging to achieve in Malaysia's tropical weather. Aim for a consistent surrounding temperature for the piano room, ideally ranging between 25 to 30 °C.
